Windscreen space matters in a 4WD. Navigation equipment, phone mounts and other accessories can already limit the available mounting area. A compact camera and a considered cable route help preserve the driver's view while keeping the installation tidy.
The Garmin Dash Cam Tandem combines a 1440p forward camera with an infrared cabin-facing camera. The second lens records the vehicle interior rather than the road behind the vehicle. Voice control allows the driver to save footage without reaching for the unit, while the Garmin Drive app supports footage review on a compatible phone.
Incident footage is the primary reason. A camera can preserve the lead-up to a collision, carpark incident or dispute instead of leaving the account entirely to memory and conflicting statements. The footage does not determine fault by itself, but it may provide useful context when an insurer, police or another relevant party assesses what happened.
Touring footage is the secondary benefit. Loop recording captures the drive continuously and replaces older footage as storage fills. Clips marked for retention are protected from the normal overwrite cycle. This can be useful when an unexpected moment on a highway or track is worth keeping.
A Garmin dash cam should still be treated as a recording tool, not a substitute for attentive driving or appropriate incident reporting.
Choose the Garmin Dash Cam Tandem when both the road ahead and the vehicle interior matter. The cabin lens suits vehicles where passenger activity forms part of the required record, including fleet, rideshare and family use. Its infrared capability supports cabin recording in low light without filling the interior with visible light.
The Tandem is not a conventional front and rear dash cam. If a mini dash cam or exterior rear view is the priority, contact the workshops before ordering so the required coverage can be discussed. This avoids assuming that every Garmin dash cam configuration records the same areas.
A 12V outlet connection is the simpler arrangement. The camera receives power from the outlet and normally operates while that circuit is active. The trade-off is a visible cable, and parking recording may not be available if the outlet switches off with the ignition.
A hardwired installation hides the cable behind the vehicle trim and connects the camera through fused feeds. A switched feed supplies power while the ignition is on. A constant feed can support parking mode when the compatible hardware and settings are in place. Parking recording may be triggered by an impact or motion, but operation depends on the installation and camera configuration.
Hardwiring is usually the cleaner choice for a touring build. It requires care around cable routing, fuse selection and the vehicle's electrical system, so installation should match the vehicle rather than follow a one-size-fits-all approach.
Garmin is the stocked brand in this collection. The current Garmin dash cam option combines a compact body, forward and cabin recording, voice control and app-based footage review in one unit. Those features suit installations where windscreen space and straightforward access to saved clips matter.
Other dash cam formats exist across the market, but they do not all provide the same view. Confirm whether you need forward-only, cabin-facing or exterior rear recording before choosing a unit.
A clean installation routes the power cable from the camera behind the headlining and trim before it reaches the dash. A hardwired setup uses fused connections for the required switched and constant feeds. Poor cable placement can remain visible from the driver's seat or interfere with how the camera is positioned.
Mounting also needs to suit the camera. The Garmin Dash Cam Tandem requires a clear forward view and an unobstructed view into the cabin. The position should keep the unit from unnecessarily restricting the driver's view while allowing both lenses to record their intended areas.
