4WD TYRE COMPRESSORS & INFLATION KITS

ARB twin-cylinder compressors, sized to real touring use

Adjusting tyre pressure for the terrain is one of the most underused techniques in 4WD driving. Drop pressures from 36psi highway to 18psi for sand, the tyre footprint doubles and traction transforms. The catch: every change down comes with a change back up. The difference between a portable plug-in compressor and a serious 4WD compressor is 25 to 30 minutes per pump-up cycle, and multiplied across a weekend that is real time and frustration saved.

Ultimate Offroad stocks ARB Twin Air Compressors and the ARB heavy-duty compressor range, plus inflation kits with hose, gauge and adapters. In-stock for shipping or workshop install at our Victorian workshops.

KEY CATEGORIES AND WHAT THEY'RE BUILT FOR

ARB TWIN AIR

Twin-cylinder portable or under-bonnet compressor. The benchmark for serious 4WD compressors, fast pump-up and run air lockers reliably.

ARB HEAVY DUTY

Single-cylinder version of the Twin. Slightly slower per pump-up cycle, lower price point, suits owners pumping up only their own vehicle.

INFLATION KITS

Quick-disconnect hose, brass tyre chuck and digital gauge bundles. Pair with Staun automatic deflators for full tyre management in minutes.

FIXED MOUNT

Under-bonnet bracket, hard-wired with isolator switch. Faster to deploy, integrates with ARB air lockers if fitted.

THE RIGHT COMPRESSOR SAVES REAL TIME

For occasional weekenders who deflate once and reinflate at the bowser, a portable 12V compressor in the boot is enough. For regular touring (especially solo) where you adjust pressures multiple times per trip, a fixed-mount or quick-deploy ARB Twin Air Compressor saves real time and frustration.

For commercial vehicles, group tour leaders or anyone airing up multiple vehicles in one stop, heavy-duty twin compressors with large air receivers move air fast. Cheap "cigarette plug" compressors take 15 to 25 minutes per tyre. A portable ARB Twin takes 3 to 5 minutes per tyre. The difference adds up when you do four tyres twice a day.

TYRE PRESSURE FOR TERRAIN

Highway runs at 36 to 40psi (vehicle-dependent). Hard gravel sits at 26 to 30psi. Soft sand drops to 16 to 20psi (lower for very soft sand). Rock and technical 4WD typically runs at 18 to 22psi. Always reinflate to highway pressure before bitumen, and always reinflate before sealed road to protect the tyre.

Vehicle weight matters: heavier rigs need slightly higher pressures across the same terrain. Get the pressure right and the difference in traction, ride and tyre wear is dramatic.

ARB TWIN AIR COMPRESSOR

The ARB Twin is the benchmark for serious 4WD compressors. Twin-cylinder design moves more air faster than single-cylinder portables, and it is rated for the duty cycle that running air lockers and pumping up multiple vehicles demands.

Available as portable kit (in a case with hose and gauge) or as fixed under-bonnet mount with permanent wiring and isolator switch. The fixed install runs an air locker as a bonus, useful if you also fit ARB Air Lockers.

ARB HEAVY DUTY COMPRESSOR

Single-cylinder version of the Twin. Slightly slower per pump-up cycle, lower price point, suits owners who pump up only their own vehicle. Reliable, well-supported, the workshop standard for touring rigs that do not need locker capability.

For most weekend and family touring builds, the Heavy Duty single is the right balance of speed and budget. The Twin is the upgrade for solo regular touring or builds that include ARB Air Lockers.

INFLATION KITS AND DEFLATORS

The compressor is half the kit. The other half is hose, gauge, deflators and adapters. ARB inflation kits ship with quick-disconnect hose, brass tyre chuck and digital gauge.

Combine with Staun automatic tyre deflators to drop all four tyres simultaneously to a preset pressure: saves another five minutes. Combined with a Twin compressor and an air manifold you can effectively change all four tyres in 5 to 10 minutes total.

BRANDS WE STOCK AND WHY

ARB is the default choice for 4WD compressors in Australia. The Twin Air Compressor and Heavy Duty single-cylinder compressors are the workshop standards: strong service network, established reliability, full air system integration with ARB Air Lockers if you go that direction.

Clearview covers vehicle-specific bracketry to mount compressors under-bonnet on common Australian 4WDs. If you want a quieter or higher-output compressor (Viair, Off Road Aussies), reach out to the workshop, we install many compressors on order.

WHAT A QUALITY FIXED-MOUNT COMPRESSOR INSTALLATION INVOLVES

A portable compressor is plug-and-go. A fixed-mount install is a different job: under-bonnet bracket, isolator switch, fused circuit, air-line routing, and (where required) integration with an ARB air locker line. Wiring is the part most home installs get wrong, and proper bracketing keeps the compressor cool and dry.

We do compressor installs at Ferntree Gully and Pakenham, typically a 3 to 5 hour job. Worth doing if you tour solo regularly or if the vehicle is set up for ARB air lockers. Send a service enquiry if you want a fixed compressor fitted alongside other workshop work.

Servicing and installation

Professional Installation at Our Victorian Workshop

Ultimate Offroad operates two Victorian locations, Ferntree Gully and Pakenham, with a full workshop team experienced in 4WD accessory fitting, suspension upgrades, and auto electrical work. If you're buying something that needs to be installed correctly, we can handle the whole job. That includes sourcing the product, completing the installation, and managing any compliance certification required. Submit a service enquiry to get the process started.

Frequently asked questions

What pressure should I run for sand, mud and highway?

Highway: 36-40psi (vehicle-dependent). Hard gravel: 26-30psi. Sand: 16-20psi (lower for soft sand). Rock and technical 4WD: 18-22psi. Always reinflate to highway pressure before bitumen.

Portable: case-mounted, deploy from boot, plug into 12V or directly to battery. Fixed: under-bonnet bracket, hard-wired, dedicated isolator switch. Fixed is faster to deploy and integrates with air lockers.

The cheap "cigarette plug" compressors take 15-25 minutes per tyre. A portable ARB Twin takes 3-5 minutes per tyre. The difference adds up when you do four tyres twice a day.

Yes if it has the air pressure and flow rate. ARB Twin Air Compressors run air lockers reliably. Smaller compressors do not have the duty cycle for repeated locker engagement.

ARB Twin Air Compressors are loud (around 80-90dB at 1m). For quieter operation Viair and similar quieter compressors exist -- we can source.

Yes. Staun automatic deflators preset deflation and stop at target pressure. Combined with a Twin compressor and an air manifold you can effectively change all four tyres in 5-10 minutes total.

No. Compressors are accessory equipment with their own fused circuit. We supply install paperwork.

Portable, yes. Fixed-mount, possibly -- but the wiring (isolator switch, fuse placement, earth bond) is the part most home installs get wrong. Workshop install is recommended for permanent fits.

Yes. Compressor installs do not affect ADR-relevant components. Wiring must comply with electrical safety. We fit accordingly.

Booking lead time for a compressor install depends on workshop load and on the configuration. A portable or simple fixed mount is shorter than a permanent under-bonnet install with isolator switch, fuse placement, earth bonding and an air manifold tied into the bull bar. Send us a service enquiry with your vehicle and the compressor and we will confirm a slot at Ferntree Gully or Pakenham at booking.

Yes. All ARB and Clearview products ship for self-install. Heavier compressors (heavy-duty twin) need freight booking.
