Snorkels

A snorkel is two things: a high-mounted air intake that lifts the engine breathing point above water level, and a higher-altitude clean-air feed that reduces dust ingress on remote tracks. Ultimate Offroad fits genuine Safari snorkels on Ranger, Hilux, Triton, Patrol, Prado, LandCruiser and most popular Australian 4WDs. Vehicle-specific install at Ferntree Gully and Pakenham.

SAFARI SNORKELS FOR WATER CROSSINGS & DUST PROTECTION

Vehicle-specific kits, fitted at our Victorian workshops

A snorkel is two things: a high-mounted air intake that lifts the engine breathing point above water level, and a higher-altitude clean-air feed that reduces dust ingress on remote tracks. Most owners fit a snorkel for water crossings, then realise the bigger benefit is dust. The factory air intake on most 4WDs sits low under the bonnet or in the front guard, where it inhales the cloud of dust kicked up by the wheels of the vehicle in front.

A snorkel relocates the intake to roof level, where the air is dramatically cleaner. The result is longer air filter service life, less particulate making it into the intake, and no risk of hydrolocking the engine on a deep water crossing. For touring rigs that see corrugated outback roads, beach driving, or any water deeper than the bumper, a snorkel is one of the highest-value modifications you can fit.

KEY CATEGORIES AND WHAT THEY'RE BUILT FOR

SAFARI V-SPEC

The standard Safari snorkel for most popular Australian 4WDs. Vehicle-specific moulding, UV-stabilised, full sealing kit included.

SAFARI ARMAX

Higher-airflow Safari intake for tuned engines and heavy tow rigs. Same filtration spec as V-Spec, more cubic feet per minute.

PRE-FILTERS

Cyclonic and foam pre-filters reduce dust and water ingress before air reaches the main filter. Useful for heavy dust and beach work.

DIFF BREATHERS

Extended diff breathers route differential venting high up under the bonnet so water crossings do not draw water into the diffs.

WHY SAFARI

Safari has been making 4WD snorkels in Australia for decades. The kits are vehicle-specific: every snorkel is engineered to match the airflow, mounting points and engine bay layout of one specific make, model and year. The mouldings are UV-stabilised for Australian sun, the seals are designed for the dust and vibration of remote-track driving, and the kits include the ECU mounting brackets, sensors and clamps needed for the install.

For most popular Australian 4WDs the Safari V-Spec or ARMAX is the standard fitment. The ARMAX delivers higher airflow for tuned engines and high-load tow rigs without compromising filtration, while the V-Spec is the default for stock and lightly modified vehicles.

WHY DUST IS THE BIGGEST WIN

Roof-level air is dramatically cleaner than bumper-level air. On the corrugated outback roads where dust clouds linger for kilometres behind the vehicle in front, the difference between a factory bumper-level intake and a roof-level snorkel is night and day. Air filter service life typically doubles or triples on a touring rig with a snorkel, and the engine's intake tract stays cleaner for longer.

For beach driving the same applies: salt-laden spray sits low, and lifting the intake gets the engine breathing cleaner air. Engine longevity on remote-touring rigs is heavily influenced by intake cleanliness over time, which is why this is a high-value early modification.

WATER CROSSING CAPABILITY

A snorkel raises the safe water-crossing depth dramatically, in most cases to roughly the bottom of the windscreen. But water crossings depend on more than just air intake: differential breathers, electrical seals, transmission breathers and brake function all factor in.

If you cross any water more than 200mm deep, fit extended diff breathers as well. Factory breather hoses sit low under the vehicle: hot diff hits cold water, internal pressure drops, water gets sucked through the breather, diff oil emulsifies, bearings die. Extended breathers route the breather lines high (under the bonnet or up to the bull bar) so the diffs vent dry air, not water.

SNORKEL AND AIR INTAKE PAIRING

The snorkel itself is the visible part. The work below the bonnet is the rest. A clean snorkel install includes a properly sealed air filter housing, a vehicle-specific air ram or pre-cleaner where required, and confirmation that the ECU airflow sensor is reading correctly.

We pair Safari snorkels with the matching Safari intake kit on builds where airflow matters (tuned diesels, heavy tow rigs). For builds running heavy dust, snorkel pre-filters add a cyclonic or foam stage that catches the worst of the particulate before it reaches the main filter.

WHAT A QUALITY SNORKEL INSTALLATION INVOLVES

A snorkel install requires drilling and cutting the front guard panel and the airbox. Get the cut wrong and the panel never sits right; get the seal wrong and the engine sucks unfiltered air through gaps, which defeats the entire point. Get the ECU airflow sensor relocation wrong and the engine throws check-engine codes. None of this is owner-fit territory unless you have done several before.

We do snorkel installs at Ferntree Gully and Pakenham with vehicle-specific templates, proper sealant, full panel alignment and post-install ECU check. We confirm a firm timeframe at booking. Send a service enquiry with your vehicle make, model, year and engine variant, and we will quote and book.

Servicing and installation

Professional Installation at Our Victorian Workshop

Ultimate Offroad operates two Victorian locations, Ferntree Gully and Pakenham, with a full workshop team experienced in 4WD accessory fitting, suspension upgrades, and auto electrical work. If you're buying something that needs to be installed correctly, we can handle the whole job. That includes sourcing the product, completing the installation, and managing any compliance certification required. Submit a service enquiry to get the process started.

Frequently asked questions

Will a snorkel actually help with dust?

Yes, significantly. Roof-level air is cleaner than bumper-level air. Air filter service life typically doubles or triples on a touring rig with a snorkel.

A snorkel raises the safe water-crossing depth dramatically -- in most cases to roughly the bottom of the windscreen. But water crossings depend on more than just air intake: differential breathers, electrical seals, transmission breathers and brake function all factor in. Fit extended diff breathers as well if you cross water regularly.

Slightly. The intake noise becomes more audible because it is now next to the cabin. Most owners find the intake whoosh under throttle pleasant. Some prefer it muted -- ARMAX intakes have a slightly quieter snorkel head than V-Spec.

Fitted correctly, a Safari snorkel is neutral or slightly positive on performance. The ARMAX delivers measurably more airflow for tuned engines.

Most manufacturers accept Safari snorkels as warranty-friendly when professionally installed. We supply install paperwork. Confirm with your specific dealer.

Possible but not recommended. The cut on the front guard is permanent and visible -- if you get it wrong, you live with it. The airbox seal is critical for engine health. Workshop install gives you proper templates and post-install testing.

Most popular Australian 4WDs are covered (Ranger, Hilux, Triton, Patrol, Prado, LandCruiser, Pajero, D-MAX, MU-X, Navara, Colorado). For uncommon vehicles, contact the workshop -- some kits are available on order, some require fabrication.

Most snorkel heads add 30-50mm to vehicle height. For garage door clearance, factor that in. The snorkel head is removable for shipping or workshop service.

Yes. Safari snorkels are ADR-compliant and roadworthy in all Australian states when fitted correctly. We supply paperwork.

Booking lead time for a Safari snorkel depends on kit availability and on workshop load. The install covers the guard cut, airbox seal, snorkel head fit and post-install testing. Send us a service enquiry with your vehicle and the kit and we will confirm a slot at Ferntree Gully or Pakenham at booking.

Yes. Full vehicle-specific kits ship nationwide for self-install. Buy with workshop install if you want the cut and seal done by us.
