A 4WD roof console makes practical use of the space above the cabin. It provides console storage for maps, sunglasses, a notebook, an EpiPen and other small gear. An overhead console can also provide a fixed mounting position for a UHF radio, microphone clip, switch plate and associated wiring.

WHAT A ROOF CONSOLE IS FOR

A console addresses storage and accessory placement without adding more equipment around the dashboard. It can keep frequently used small items contained while placing a UHF microphone and selected controls within practical reach. Some buyers describe the unit as a roof console shelf, but it is a moulded, vehicle-specific component rather than a universal shelf.

For useful console storage, choose what needs to remain accessible and avoid overloading the compartment. The main benefit is an organised cabin with wiring routed through the trim instead of left visible along the headliner.

UHF RADIO INTEGRATION

Many 4WD Interiors consoles include a cutout or mounting position for a compact UHF head unit. The microphone clip can be mounted on the front face, while the coax and power wiring are routed through the trim. Compatibility depends on the console version and radio footprint, so both should be checked before installation.

SWITCH PLATES AND ACCESSORY WIRING

Depending on the product, the lower face may accept a Carling or rocker-style switch plate. This can provide a mounting point for driving-light switches, a fridge socket, a dual-battery monitor, compressor controls or other accessory triggers.

Each circuit still needs the appropriate loom, fuse and relay arrangement. The available space, switch layout and wiring path should be planned before the console is fitted.

FITMENT AND HEADLINER WORK

Installation varies by vehicle. A console may use existing grab-handle locations or mounting points at the roof structural cross-member. The sun visors, mirror or front edge of the headliner may need to be released to reach those points.

Headliner work also depends on the application. Do not assume every console is a no-trim fit. The console should sit evenly against the headliner, with secure mounting and concealed wiring. Poor alignment can leave visible gaps or create rattles.

VEHICLE GENERATION SPECIFICS

A console is not transferable between every generation of the same model. A Hilux N70 application differs from an N80, a Patrol Y61 differs from a Y62, and a Ranger PX differs from a Next-Gen Ranger.
