4WD EXHAUST SYSTEM OPTIONS

DPF back, cat back and full systems for selected diesel and petrol 4WDs

A 4WD exhaust system should be selected around the vehicle, its emissions equipment and how it is used. This collection includes vehicle-specific MPI Automotive products, including Manta exhaust options for selected Ranger, Ranger Raptor, Hilux, LandCruiser, BT-50, Patrol Y62, RAM 1500, Silverado and D-Max applications. Available configurations include DPF back exhaust, cat back exhaust, turbo-back and full-system designs.

The right choice is not simply the largest pipe available. Pipe routing, muffler configuration, factory emissions equipment, noise preference and clearance around other accessories all matter. Some vehicles in the collection use a 3 inch exhaust, while another listed Ranger application uses a larger configuration. Check the exact product listing and vehicle details before ordering.

KEY CATEGORIES AND WHAT THEY'RE BUILT FOR

DPF-BACK EXHAUST SYSTEMS

A DPF back exhaust replaces the section downstream of the diesel particulate filter. The DPF remains in its factory position, while the rear pipe, muffler arrangement and outlet may change. Retaining the DPF does not automatically establish roadworthiness. The complete configuration still needs to meet the requirements that apply to the vehicle and state.

CAT-BACK EXHAUST SYSTEMS

A cat back exhaust replaces the system behind the catalytic converter. It is commonly considered for petrol vehicles where the owner wants a different exhaust note, revised routing or reduced restriction without replacing the factory catalytic converter. Collection examples include RAM 1500, Ranger Raptor and Patrol Y62 applications.

FULL SYSTEMS WITH EXTRACTORS AND HI-FLOW CATS

A full system can extend forward to include extractors, catalytic converters and connecting pipework. The collection includes relevant Silverado and Patrol Y62 configurations. These systems require careful application checking because emissions equipment, sensor placement, noise and state requirements can affect whether a particular setup is suitable.

TURBO-BACK SYSTEMS

Manta-titled turbo-back configurations are available for selected D-Max, Hilux, LandCruiser and Ranger applications. Some product titles describe changes to catalytic or muffler equipment. A listing description is not proof of legal suitability, so confirm the proposed configuration before purchase or installation.

WHY UPGRADE AN EXHAUST ON A MODERN DIESEL

A modern diesel exhaust includes emissions hardware that must be considered as part of the system. For a touring or towing vehicle, the aim may be improved flow downstream of the DPF, a different outlet arrangement or better heat management under sustained load. Results depend on the engine, factory restriction, exhaust layout and any supporting calibration.

A DPF back exhaust does not need to remove or modify the DPF. Changes to a DPF, catalytic converter or other regulated emissions equipment may be prohibited or require specific approval. Ultimate Offroad does not treat a generic product description as compliance advice. Check the applicable state regulations or discuss the exact vehicle and system with our workshop before proceeding.

Sound also needs realistic expectations. The DPF can substantially mute an exhaust note, so a diesel DPF-back system may remain restrained. Muffler-free configurations can sound different from systems using a muffler or hotdog. Product selection should reflect how the vehicle is used, not sound alone.

V8 PETROL EXHAUST LOGIC

For the V8 petrol applications in this collection, including Patrol Y62, RAM 1500 and Silverado, the choice ranges from a rear cat-back section to a more extensive system with extractors and cats. A cat-back configuration generally leaves the factory catalytic converter forward of the replacement section. A full system changes more components and requires a closer review of compatibility and compliance.

Tip size, muffler arrangement and bimodal integration also affect the result. The catalogue includes single-into-twin RAM systems, Patrol combinations with mufflers or hotdogs, and Ranger Raptor systems with bimodal integration. Choose the exact listing for the engine and vehicle generation rather than relying on pipe diameter alone.

SIDE EXIT, REAR EXIT AND TWIN TIP

Exit layout affects appearance, clearance and exhaust routing. A rear exit is the conventional touring arrangement. A side exit may suit a vehicle where rear-bar, recovery-point or spare-wheel clearance is a concern, subject to the applicable positioning and noise requirements. Twin outlets are available on selected applications.

Choose by use case. Start with the vehicle and engine, then consider towing, off-road clearance, rear accessories and acceptable sound. A 3 inch exhaust is not automatically better than every other size. The complete system design and its match to the vehicle are more important.

BRANDS IN THIS COLLECTION

The active collection catalogue is supplied by MPI Automotive and includes products carrying the Manta name. A Manta exhaust is available here in several vehicle-specific forms, but coverage and configuration vary by application.

WHAT A QUALITY EXHAUST INSTALLATION INVOLVES

Installation requires more than bolting together pipe sections. Flanges, clamps, gaskets and hangers must suit the vehicle. The system must be aligned so it does not contact the body, chassis, driveline or nearby accessories through normal movement and heat cycles. Required sensors and emissions components must be preserved unless an approved configuration specifically provides otherwise.

After installation, the vehicle should be checked for leaks, clearance and stored fault codes where relevant. Turbo-back and full systems need extra attention because they replace more factory components and may have calibration or compliance implications. Confirm those requirements before booking.

Frequently asked questions

Will a DPF-back exhaust void my warranty?

A DPF-back system normally leaves the DPF and upstream emissions components in place, but that does not guarantee a particular warranty outcome. Warranty decisions depend on the manufacturer, dealer, fault and relationship between the modification and the claim. Check the proposed system with your dealer or vehicle manufacturer before installation if factory warranty coverage is a concern.

That depends on the exact vehicle, system, emissions equipment, outlet position, noise level and applicable state requirements. Do not assume a Manta exhaust or any manufacturer description guarantees roadworthiness. Review the supplied product documentation and confirm the configuration against current state regulations. Our workshop can discuss the installation, but regulatory approval should not be inferred from fitment alone.

There is no reliable universal figure. Results vary with the engine, factory exhaust, replacement section, calibration and supporting modifications. A DPF back exhaust may change flow without producing the same result as a full system with extractors and cats. Treat any performance figure as application-specific and ask for evidence relevant to your vehicle and chosen configuration.

A less restrictive system may change how the engine responds under load, but a fuel economy improvement is not guaranteed. Vehicle weight, tyres, gearing, driving style, towing load and calibration can have a larger effect. Choose an exhaust for correct vehicle fitment and the intended use rather than relying on a projected saving at the fuel pump.

The best sound is subjective and depends on the engine, muffler arrangement, pipework and cabin tolerance. A DPF-equipped diesel is usually more subdued because the filter mutes the exhaust note. V8 cat-back systems can produce a more noticeable change. Tell the workshop whether you want restrained touring sound or a stronger note before selecting the configuration.

A correctly matched downstream system should preserve the sensors and connections required by that application, but no blanket guarantee is appropriate. Faults can result from leaks, disturbed wiring, incompatible components or changes to regulated equipment. Our installation process can include a post-fitment scan where relevant, with any detected issue investigated before the vehicle is handed back.

An appropriately selected exhaust can be used on a towing vehicle. The important points are correct application, adequate clearance, heat management and retention of required emissions equipment. Any claimed improvement under load remains vehicle-dependent. Tell us the usual trailer load and driving conditions so the system can be assessed as part of the complete vehicle setup.

A snorkel and bull bar are located away from the exhaust routing on these vehicles, but rear accessories require closer checking. Tow bars, rear bars, recovery points, spare-wheel carriers and altered suspension can affect available clearance. We confirm the specific vehicle and accessory layout before recommending side-exit, rear-exit or twin-tip pipework.

Send Ultimate Offroad the vehicle make, model, engine, generation and current modifications, along with the exhaust product or result you are considering. The Ferntree Gully or Pakenham workshop can then check compatibility, discuss compliance considerations and provide a quote. Installation timing is confirmed during booking because access and labour vary between DPF-back, cat-back, turbo-back and full systems.

Suitable exhaust systems can be shipped Australia-wide, subject to the product, destination and freight arrangements confirmed when ordering. Check that the listing matches the complete vehicle and engine details before dispatch. Professional installation is recommended where emissions equipment, sensors, extractors or tight accessory clearances are involved. Contact the team if the required configuration is unclear.
