WHY CONSIDER HARD SHELL INSTEAD OF SOFT SHELL

A hard shell design generally contains its fabric inside the closed shell and has fewer cover and strap steps during pack-down. That is useful for frequent moves, but wet fabric still needs proper drying and ventilation. The shell does not remove the need for maintenance.

Soft shell tents may provide more sleeping space for the money and can suit larger camp layouts. Hard shell tents usually cost more and add a substantial item to the roof system. The decision should be based on access, load, sleeping needs and how often camp is moved.

CHOOSE BY USE CASE

Choose a clamshell when consistent internal height is a priority. The Bush Company AX27 is the clear starting point for this format, subject to vehicle and rack compatibility.

Consider a wedge when closed height and the shape of the deployed tent matter more than even headroom. Confirm the opening direction before ordering because it affects ladder position, awning coverage and access around the vehicle.

If entry location drives the decision, compare the RAXAR front-entry and side-entry models. A RAXAR rooftop tent should be assessed as part of the complete build, including doors, antennas, lights, awnings and any gear already carried on the roof.

MOUNTING AND RACK CONSIDERATIONS

A rooftop tent applies different loads while the vehicle is moving and while people are inside the parked tent. Static and dynamic ratings are not interchangeable. Check the vehicle manufacturer's roof-load limit, the rack manufacturer's instructions and the tent mounting requirements together.

Pairing the tent with an awning and suitable awning wall kits can create a more enclosed camp, but mounting space and deployment paths need to be planned first.

Check how the rooftop tent ladder stores, locks and reaches the ground on your vehicle. Lift height, parked ground conditions and entry position all affect safe, practical access.

Annex availability, internal storage and accessory mounting vary by model. Do not assume an annex, roof bars or other accessories are included. Confirm the current product specification and make sure any added load remains within the limits of the tent, rack and vehicle.
