E LOCKER AND HARROP ELOCKER OPTIONS FOR 4WDS

Harrop ELocker control, vehicle-specific fitment and specialist installation

An e locker gives the driver control over when both wheels on an axle turn at the same speed. A factory open differential allows those wheels to rotate at different speeds while cornering. Off road, available drive can be limited by the wheel with less traction. Engaging a Harrop ELocker locks the axle side to side so the wheel with grip can keep driving.

When disengaged, the differential operates normally for everyday driving. The locker is selected from a dash-mounted switch when additional traction is required, then disengaged before returning to sealed or other high-traction surfaces. Correct use matters because a locked differential prevents the two wheels from rotating at different speeds through a corner.

KEY CATEGORIES AND WHAT THEY ARE BUILT FOR

FRONT ELOCKERS

A front diff locker can help when articulation or a steep loose climb unloads one front wheel. Fitment is vehicle-specific, so the axle, differential design and listed application must be checked before ordering.

REAR ELOCKERS

A rear diff locker is a common first choice for touring and technical 4WD builds. The rear often carries more load, and locking it can maintain drive when one rear wheel loses traction.

FRONT AND REAR BUILDS

Front and rear lockers provide driver-controlled locking at both axles. This arrangement suits vehicles built for more demanding articulation, rock, mud and steep loose terrain. Tyres, suspension and driver technique remain important parts of the overall setup.

WHY CHOOSE A HARROP ELOCKER

A Harrop ELocker uses electrical actuation. It does not need the compressor, air tank or air lines required by a pneumatic system. For a vehicle without an existing air system, that can mean a more direct installation layout. This electric diff lock still requires correct differential setup and protected electrical routing.

The decision should account for the complete build rather than the locker alone. Existing equipment, available mounting space, intended terrain and the required front or rear application can all affect the right approach. Compare those details with the listed application before ordering. If you are not sure, reach out to our friendly staff.

Challenger 98-08, Pajero 83-21 and Triton 86-21 rear fitment, 9 inch and 28 spline.

Model name and year are not always enough to identify a differential. Gearing, housing design and axle details may also matter. Compare the vehicle make, model, year and relevant driveline information with the listed application before supply or installation. If you are not sure, reach out to our friendly staff.

CHOOSE BY USE CASE: FRONT, REAR OR BOTH

For many touring builds, the rear is the practical place to start. It carries the vehicle load and can lose traction on steep or uneven terrain. A rear locker also leaves the front differential open, which retains normal differential action at the steering axle while the locker is disengaged or not fitted.

A front locker becomes relevant when front-wheel traction is the recurring limit, including steep loose climbs and situations where articulation unloads a front wheel. It should be selected for the actual differential rather than from the vehicle badge alone.

Front and rear locking suits more demanding technical use. It is not automatically necessary for every touring vehicle. Consider the terrain, existing traction aids, tyres, suspension and how often the vehicle encounters cross-axle conditions. If you are not sure, reach out to our friendly staff.

THE HARROP ELOCKER RANGE

Harrop is the only vendor represented in this collection. A Harrop ELocker must match the particular differential and vehicle application, whether fitted to the front or rear axle. That specificity is important because locker selection depends on the internal differential configuration.

The useful distinction is driver control. The locker remains disengaged for normal differential operation and is electrically selected when the terrain requires additional traction. It must still be installed, wired and operated correctly. A product match alone does not replace checking the complete differential specification.

WHAT A QUALITY ELOCKER INSTALLATION INVOLVES

An ELocker installation is substantial differential work. The differential is disassembled, the carrier is removed and the Harrop ELocker is installed for the relevant application. Gear mesh and pinion preload must be set to factory specification before reassembly. Oil is replaced, with bearings addressed where required by the condition of the differential.

The electrical work includes a dash switch, fused power supply, relay and wiring to the differential-mounted actuator. Routing and protection matter in a 4WD exposed to water, dust, vibration and underbody contact. The switch must also be positioned to reduce accidental operation.

Our Ferntree Gully and Pakenham workshops handle Harrop ELocker fitting from differential setup through to wiring and operational testing. Send us a service enquiry with the vehicle, intended front or rear fitment and any known differential details to discuss the work involved and arrange a booking. Frequently asked questions

Will I notice a Harrop ELocker in normal driving?

When disengaged, the Harrop ELocker is designed to allow normal differential action, so the wheels can rotate at different speeds while cornering. It is selected only when additional off-road traction is required. The locker should be disengaged before returning to sealed or other high-traction surfaces where normal differential movement is needed.

A rear diff locker is the usual starting point for many touring builds because the rear carries load and can become the traction limit on steep or uneven terrain. A front diff locker may be more useful where front-wheel lift is the recurring problem. The right choice depends on the vehicle, terrain and existing traction aids.

Modification and road-use requirements can vary by state, vehicle and installation. Do not treat a product listing as confirmation of compliance. The locker should remain disengaged on sealed surfaces. Check the regulations that apply where the vehicle is registered, or speak with our Ferntree Gully or Pakenham workshop about the proposed installation before proceeding.

Only when the selected kit matches the differential and its gearing requirements. Some products are gearing-specific. The listed Navara D23 NP300 rear Harrop ELocker, for example, is for 3.69 gearing and up. Compare the vehicle and differential details with the catalogue listing before ordering. If you are not sure, reach out to our friendly staff.

An ELocker is not a towing-capacity upgrade and should not be used as a reason to exceed the vehicle manufacturer's rating. Continue to follow the published limits and operating requirements for the vehicle. If the modification could affect a particular approval, warranty position or registered configuration, confirm that with the relevant manufacturer, dealer or state authority.

Warranty policies vary between manufacturers, dealers, vehicles and the cause of a later fault. An aftermarket differential modification may affect how a driveline claim is assessed. Ask the vehicle manufacturer or dealer for confirmation before installation, and retain the product and workshop records. We can explain the installation scope, but we cannot determine another company's warranty decision.

No compressor, air tank or air lines are used for the electrical actuation described in the current Harrop ELocker range. The installation instead requires a switch, fused electrical supply, relay and wiring to the actuator at the differential. The differential itself still needs specialist mechanical setup, so simpler actuation does not make this a basic bolt-on installation.

A retrofit is possible where Harrop lists a compatible application for the vehicle's differential. The existing housing remains, while the differential is disassembled and the carrier setup is changed for the locker. Fitment must be confirmed from the actual differential specification, including any applicable gearing or housing requirements, before parts are ordered or workshop work begins.

Send a service enquiry with the vehicle make, model, year, intended front or rear fitment and any known differential details. Our Ferntree Gully or Pakenham workshop can discuss the differential and electrical work, prepare a quote and arrange a suitable booking. If you are not sure, reach out to our friendly staff.

Yes. A Harrop ELocker can be sent to a local differential specialist or workshop. Confirm the vehicle and differential details before ordering because similar vehicle models can use different internal configurations. Self-installation is not recommended without differential setup experience, as gear mesh and pinion preload must be established correctly during the rebuild.
