COMPLETE 4WD VEHICLE PROTECTION

Front, side, rear and underbody protection for serious touring

Most 4WD owners think about protection as a single decision: bull bar at the front. The bar matters, but it is one of four protection zones on a touring vehicle. Underbody hits from rocks, ruts and stumps damage the gearbox, transfer case and fuel tank. Side hits from rocks and tree stumps wreck door sills and panels. Rear hits from tow ramps, jetty edges and trailer corners crumple the back end. Wildlife strike at the front is just one of the four scenarios that take a build out of action.

This collection covers the full perimeter. Pair it with a bull bar and you have a vehicle that can take a real day in the bush and still drive home. Every component we stock is vehicle-specific, ADR-compliant where applicable, and engineered to mount, take a strike and recover loads safely.

KEY CATEGORIES AND WHAT THEY'RE BUILT FOR

UNDERBODY ARMOUR

Engine sump, gearbox and fuel tank skid plates, mounted to chassis rails so impact loads transfer to the chassis, not the protected component.

ROCK SLIDERS

Heavy-duty side bars rated for technical off-road impact. Protect rocker panels and door sills from rocks, stumps and ruts.

REAR BARS

Steel structure protecting the rear panel with integrated rated tow tongue, recovery hitch points and (on touring rigs) wheel carriers and jerry can mounts.

RECOVERY POINTS

Rated chassis-mounted recovery points engineered to take kinetic and winch recovery loads safely. Standard tie-downs are not recovery points.

UNDERBODY PROTECTION

Underbody armour shields the engine sump, transmission, transfer case and fuel tank from rock impacts and dragged debris. The hierarchy of priorities depends on what your vehicle does and what sits low to the ground. Most vehicles benefit most from a sump and gearbox skid plate, and heavier expedition builds add transfer case and fuel tank protection. Steel plate is the standard, with alloy available for weight-conscious builds.

Mounting must be engineered to the chassis with the right stand-offs so impacts transfer to the chassis rails, not the protected component. Cheap plates that bolt directly to a gearbox case can crack the gearbox under impact, which is why we fit only chassis-rail-mounted protection. Browse Underbody Protection for vehicle-specific kits.

ROCK SLIDERS AND SIDE STEPS

Side protection serves two distinct purposes. Rock sliders are heavy-duty bars built to take a side impact from a rock or stump, and they protect the rocker panel and door sill on technical terrain. Most serious off-road builds run sliders, mounted through the chassis with engineered outriggers so impact loads transfer through the chassis rails rather than the body.

Standard side steps are lighter, suit suburban driving and limited touring, and serve mainly as access aids: they will not take a hard side hit. Daily-driven 4WDs that see only mild trail use can run side steps; anything more demands sliders. Both bolt to rocker mounting points or chassis outriggers, and we install both at the workshop with proper torque spec and alignment.

REAR PROTECTION AND TOW BARS

The rear of a touring 4WD takes more punishment than people expect. Tow ramps catch the rear bumper, jetty edges scrape the lower panel, other vehicles back into yours, trailer corners catch the corner of the tub. Rear bars and towbar carriers wrap the back end with a steel structure that includes integrated tow points, rated recovery hitches and (on touring rigs) wheel carriers, jerry can holders and rear lights.

For long-range touring rigs, swing-away or fixed wheel carriers move the spare wheel from the rear underbody (where it sits low and gets damaged) to a protected position on the rear bar, freeing up underbody space for long-range fuel tanks and improving departure angle. We fit PIAK Offroad and Offroad Animal rear bars on Ranger, Hilux, Triton, Patrol, LandCruiser 76/79 and 200/300 Series.

RATED RECOVERY POINTS

A rated recovery point is non-negotiable on any touring vehicle. Standard tie-down hooks are not recovery points: they are not engineered to take the force of a kinetic or winch recovery and they will tear out of the chassis under load. Recovery point installation requires welding or bolting through the chassis with the right hardware, plus a load test.

We supply and install rated recovery points (Saber, Roadsafe, Carbon) on Ranger, Hilux, Patrol, LandCruiser and most popular utes, typically as part of full front-end builds.

LIQUID SPRING FOR HEAVY F-TRUCK AND RAM TOW BUILDS

Owners of F250, F350, F450, F550 and RAM 3500 to 5500 cab chassis builds use protection alongside Liquid Spring smart adaptive suspension, where we are Australia's certified Liquid Spring installer. The combination of full perimeter protection plus adaptive suspension keeps the rig level and damped under load, which matters for heavy tow and expedition builds where the ride at GVM is the difference between a manageable trip and a wrecked back.

Liquid Spring is not the right answer for every protection build, but for serious tow and expedition F-Series and RAM rigs, it pairs naturally with the full protection package and gives the chassis a ride quality that protection alone cannot.

BRANDS WE STOCK AND WHY

Protection components only work as well as the brand engineering behind them, so we name what we fit.

PIAK Offroad makes premium Australian rear bars and towbar carriers for popular utes and 4WDs, with clean lines, integrated wheel carrier and recovery hitch options, and tested mounting structure. The standard fit for serious touring rigs. Offroad Animal covers aggressive-styled rear bars and protection components, with the Predator series for Ranger, Triton and D-MAX a popular choice for builds that see hard tracks.

Jungle 4x4 covers side and rear protection with practical design features and competitive pricing for the spec. We also stock The Bush Company, Front Runner, MSA 4x4 Accessories and selected products from other premium brands. Most vehicles can be fully kitted across all four zones with a coordinated brand set.

WEIGHT, PAYLOAD AND THE SUSPENSION CONNECTION

A full set of protection components adds 80 to 150kg depending on coverage. That is enough to push factory suspension out of comfort range and affect GVM. We typically pair protection upgrades with a heavy-duty suspension upgrade, and for fully kitted touring rigs a GVM upgrade is also part of the build. Front bull bars in particular add 60 to 90kg to the front axle which often shows as nose-down ride height and reduced front clearance.

The right approach is to spec protection, suspension and (where required) GVM upgrade together, not one at a time. Otherwise you end up doing the suspension twice.

WHAT A QUALITY VEHICLE PROTECTION INSTALLATION INVOLVES

Protection components only work if they are mounted to take and transfer impact loads correctly. Underbody plates need engineered stand-offs so the chassis rails carry the hit. Rock sliders need to bolt through the chassis or through reinforced rocker mounts (a body-mount fit will tear out under load). Rear bars need full alignment so the towbar carrier runs square. Recovery points need to be welded or bolted with the right hardware and load-tested.

We install protection components at Ferntree Gully and Pakenham, including welding where required, and we issue a fitment report covering attachment points and torque settings. For a full perimeter build, send the workshop your vehicle and the spec via the service enquiry form.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need underbody protection or just a bull bar?

Both serve different jobs. The bar protects against wildlife and front impacts. Underbody armour protects against rock, root and rut damage from below. If you only do gravel and graded tracks, a bar may be enough. If you do trail, beach or remote tracks, add at least a sump and gearbox skid plate.

Rock sliders are heavy-duty bars built to take a side impact from a rock or stump. They protect the door sill. Side steps are lighter, mainly access aids, and will not take a hard side hit. Sliders typically weigh 25-40kg per side; steps weigh 5-15kg per side.

Most popular utes and 4WDs (Ranger, Hilux, Triton, Patrol, LandCruiser, D-MAX) have vehicle-specific kits. We match the kit to your specific year and model and confirm fitment before booking. If your vehicle is uncommon, we can fabricate.

Most aftermarket protection is warranty-friendly when professionally installed. We supply fitment paperwork. Always check with your dealer for the specific component.

Only if they have a rated recovery hitch. Standard tow tongues are not rated for recovery. Most premium rear bars (PIAK, Offroad Animal) include rated hitches or are compatible with rated hitches sold separately. We will spec the right combo.

A full set adds 80-150kg depending on coverage. That is enough to push factory suspension out of comfort range and affect GVM. We typically pair protection upgrades with a heavy-duty suspension upgrade and (for fully kitted touring rigs) a GVM upgrade.

For most vehicles yes. A full perimeter build covers the bull bar with sensor work, the sliders mounted to chassis points, underbody plates with clearance against brake and fuel lines, and the rear bar with carrier and electricals. We line up the parts, hold the slot and run the build end to end so the vehicle leaves aligned, sensor-tested and ready to drive. Contact us with your vehicle and the spec you want and we will confirm a firm timeframe at booking.

For uncommon vehicles or specific build requirements, yes. We fabricate at our Ferntree Gully workshop. Get in touch with the build spec.

Some rear bars include corner protection extending up the wheel arches. For Patrol, LandCruiser 76/78/79 and similar full-frame builds it is worth specifying. For most utes it is not standard.

Each component carries its own workshop work: the bull bar with sensor testing, the sliders mounted to chassis points, the underbody plates with clearance checks, and the rear bar with carrier and electricals. Run as a coordinated build, we line up the parts, schedule the bays and finish with a full alignment and electrical commissioning. The timeframe depends on the vehicle, the spec and what else we are fitting alongside. We confirm a firm timeframe at booking.

Yes for most components. Heavier items (rear bars, underbody plates) need freight booking. Contact us with the vehicle and spec.
