4WD TYRE ACCESSORIES, DEFLATORS & TPMS

Pressure management, repair kits and monitoring for serious touring

Tyre management makes the difference between a comfortable touring trip and a stranded one. Adjusting tyre pressure for terrain transforms how a 4WD handles: drop pressures from 36psi highway to 18psi for sand, the tyre footprint roughly doubles and you stop sinking. Drop to 22psi on rocks and the carcass moulds around obstacles instead of bouncing off them.

Inflate back to highway pressure before bitumen and the tyre lasts. None of this is hard, but you need the right gear to do it fast. Ultimate Offroad stocks tyre deflators, pressure gauges, repair kits, TPMS and the supporting accessories that keep your tyres performing across sand, gravel and bitumen.

KEY CATEGORIES AND WHAT THEY'RE BUILT FOR

DEFLATORS

Staun automatic deflators preset to target pressure and stop. Drop all four tyres simultaneously while you check the engine bay.

PRESSURE GAUGES

Digital gauges with 0.1psi resolution. Cheap analogue dials are wildly inaccurate, get a quality digital gauge for any serious touring.

REPAIR KITS

Plug repair kits handle tread punctures with rubber strip, reaming and insertion tools. Sidewall damage means the spare comes out.

TPMS

Real-time tyre pressure and temperature monitoring for vehicles, caravans and trailers. Catch slow leaks before something fails.

TYRE PRESSURE IS THE MOST UNDERUSED 4WD SKILL

Adjusting tyre pressure for terrain transforms how a 4WD handles. Drop pressures from 36psi highway to 18psi for sand, the tyre footprint roughly doubles and you stop sinking. Drop to 22psi on rocks and the carcass moulds around obstacles instead of bouncing off them. Inflate back to highway pressure before bitumen and the tyre lasts.

None of this is hard, but you need the right gear to do it fast. The right combination of deflators, gauge and compressor turns a 30-minute ordeal into a 5-minute routine, which means you actually do it instead of skipping it.

TYRE DEFLATORS

Manual deflators (single-screw caps with a built-in pressure gauge) work but take time. Automatic deflators (Staun and similar) preset to a target pressure and stop automatically when reached, so you can drop all four tyres simultaneously while you check the engine bay or stretch your legs.

Staun automatic deflators are the workshop standard. For weekenders, manual is fine. For regular touring (especially solo) Staun automatics save 5 to 10 minutes per deflation cycle, and they pay back over a season.

PRESSURE GAUGES

A digital gauge with 0.1psi resolution is the standard for serious tyre management. Cheap analogue dials are often 3 to 5psi out at common touring pressures, which is enough to make a real difference on sand. A quality digital gauge is the cheapest accuracy upgrade you can buy.

Use the same gauge across all four tyres for consistency, because different gauges read differently and the relative pressures matter as much as the absolute number.

TYRE REPAIR KITS

A puncture in remote country is what tyre repair kits are for. Plug repair kits handle most punctures: rubber strip plus reaming and insertion tools. Properly inserted plugs typically last the life of the tyre on tread punctures.

For sidewall cuts, severe damage or destroyed tyres, you need a spare and a recovery plan, because there is no field repair for a slashed sidewall. Get the tyre inspected by a tyre shop after the trip if you want a permanent internal patch on a tread plug.

TYRE PRESSURE MONITORING (TPMS)

Aftermarket TPMS systems display real-time pressure and temperature for all four wheels (sometimes including the spare and trailer). Useful for towing, where a slow leak on a trailer tyre is otherwise invisible until something fails. Bushranger and Safety Dave make solid 4WD TPMS units.

In-tyre sensors mount on the wheel during a tyre change, which gives more accurate readings and longer battery life. Valve-cap sensors screw on the existing valve stem, easier to fit but slightly less protected. Both work, in-tyre is the premium option.

BRANDS WE STOCK AND WHY

ARB covers reliable inflation accessories, deflators and the integrated air system components that pair with ARB compressors and air lockers. Bushranger covers TPMS, repair kits and entry-level inflation accessories, solid mid-tier kit. Safety Dave makes Australian-made TPMS systems for vehicles, caravans and trailers.

We also stock Clearview and RAXAR tyre accessories, plus the supporting hardware that makes a touring tyre kit complete.

WHAT A QUALITY TYRE ACCESSORY SETUP INVOLVES

Most tyre accessories are owner-fit (deflators, gauges, repair kits). TPMS install can require swapping wheel-mounted sensors during a tyre change at the workshop, or the simpler valve-cap-style sensors that fit at home.

Walk into Ferntree Gully or Pakenham if you want help selecting a kit for your specific touring style, or for TPMS sensor work as part of a service. Submit a service enquiry for any work that needs the workshop.

Servicing and installation

Professional Installation at Our Victorian Workshop

Ultimate Offroad operates two Victorian locations, Ferntree Gully and Pakenham, with a full workshop team experienced in 4WD accessory fitting, suspension upgrades, and auto electrical work. If you're buying something that needs to be installed correctly, we can handle the whole job. That includes sourcing the product, completing the installation, and managing any compliance certification required. Submit a service enquiry to get the process started.

Frequently asked questions

What pressure should I drop to for sand?

16-20psi for soft sand. 20-22psi for compacted beach. Always reinflate before sealed road. Vehicle-dependent -- heavier rigs may need slightly higher pressures.

For weekenders, manual is fine. For regular touring (especially solo) Staun automatics save 5-10 minutes per deflation cycle. They pay back over a season.

Cheap analogue dials are often 3-5psi out at common touring pressures, which is enough to make a real difference on sand. A quality digital gauge is the cheapest accuracy upgrade you can buy.

No. Plug repair kits work on tread punctures only. Sidewall damage means the tyre is finished -- swap to the spare.

For tread punctures, properly inserted plugs typically last the life of the tyre. Get the tyre inspected by a tyre shop after the trip if you want a permanent internal patch.

In-tyre sensors mount on the wheel during a tyre change (more accurate, less battery-changes). Valve-cap sensors screw on the existing valve stem (easier to fit, less protected). Both work; in-tyre is the premium option.

Yes for in-tyre sensors, during a tyre change or service. Valve-cap sensors are owner-fit.

We do not stock 4WD tyres directly but we work with local tyre suppliers and can recommend the right tyre for your vehicle, build and trip plan.

Tyre accessories are mostly walk-in or self-install. For TPMS sensor swaps during a service, 1 week or less.

No. Aftermarket TPMS uses its own display and sensors, separate from factory systems.

Yes. All deflators, gauges, repair kits and TPMS systems ship nationwide.
