OFF ROAD TOW BAR AND REAR BAR SYSTEMS FOR TOURING 4WDS

Vehicle-specific rear protection, towing integration and accessory mounting

An off road tow bar or complete rear bar must suit the vehicle, towing setup and accessories carried at the back. A suitable system may combine towing equipment with rear protection and mounting points for a spare wheel platform, jerry can holder or BBQ box. Selection matters because these components can affect access, weight distribution, trailer connection and the operation of cameras or parking sensors.

This collection includes vehicle-specific rear bars for selected Nissan, Suzuki and Toyota platforms, an Offroad Animal rear bumper and Thorburns accessories. It does not contain generic universal rear bars. Review the listed vehicle application, existing towing equipment and intended rear load before ordering. If you are not sure, reach out to our friendly staff.

KEY CATEGORIES AND WHAT THEY'RE BUILT FOR

VEHICLE-SPECIFIC REAR BARS

Rear bars are listed for the Nissan Patrol S1-4 Y62, Suzuki Jimny XL JB74 and Toyota LandCruiser 75/78, 76/78, 76, 105 and 300 Series platforms. The collection also includes the Rear Bumper | Offroad Animal.

TOW HITCH INTEGRATION

A rear bar may replace or work with parts of the factory towing arrangement. Before pairing a rear bar with an off road tow bar or tow hitch, review the manufacturer's vehicle application, towing documentation and installation requirements.

JERRY CAN HOLDERS

The range includes a Dual Jerry Can Holder, Thorburns Jerry Can Shelf and Thorburns Lockable Double Jerry Can Holder. Confirm which jerry can holder suits the selected bar and consider how it affects rear load and access.

SPARE WHEEL PLATFORMS AND BBQ BOXES

The Thorburns Spare Wheel Platform and Thorburns BBQ Box 2.0 are available for compatible rear bar setups. Review the applicable product information, mounting position and load requirements before ordering.

WHY THE REAR BAR CARRIES THE BUILD

A factory bumper is not automatically a mounting platform for a spare wheel, jerry can holder or other touring equipment. A vehicle-specific rear bar uses defined mounting points and creates a structured base for compatible accessories. It can also change access to the factory tow hitch, spare wheel location, rear camera and parking sensors.

Plan the complete rear setup before choosing the bar. Consider the spare wheel, each jerry can holder, trailer connection and any future accessory. This helps avoid selecting a bar that cannot accept the required components or having to revise the layout later.

CHOOSE BY PLATFORM AND USE CASE

For a Toyota LandCruiser, Nissan Patrol or Suzuki Jimny, use the exact vehicle application shown in the relevant product title. The listed options cover selected 75/78, 76/78, 76, 105 and 300 Series LandCruisers, the Nissan Patrol S1-4 Y62 and the Suzuki Jimny XL JB74.

Thorburns accessories include the Spare Wheel Platform, Jerry Can Shelf, Lockable Double Jerry Can Holder and BBQ Box 2.0. Do not assume that accessories transfer between brands or rear bar designs. If you are not sure, reach out to our friendly staff.

TOW RATING AND ADR COMPLIANCE

Do not assume that fitting a rear bar preserves or increases the vehicle's tow rating. Check the bar manufacturer's documentation, the vehicle manufacturer's limits and the ratings of the tow hitch, ball mount and other towing components. Installation and use must also meet the rules that apply in your state or territory.

For a towing setup, consider the complete system rather than the bar alone. A suitable weight distribution hitch may be available through our towing accessories collection. The correct tow ball mount depends on the vehicle, trailer geometry and applicable ratings.

JERRY CAN HOLDERS, BBQ BOX AND SPARE WHEEL SETUP

Matched accessories simplify planning, but each jerry can holder and platform still needs to suit the bar and available mounting position. Thorburns products in the collection include the Jerry Can Shelf, Lockable Double Jerry Can Holder, Spare Wheel Platform and BBQ Box 2.0.

Decide which items must stay permanently mounted and which need regular access. Account for the spare wheel, containers, tailgate operation and trailer connection. The final arrangement should remain within the vehicle and component manufacturers' stated limits.

WHAT REAR BAR INSTALLATION INVOLVES

Installation requires more than fastening the bar in place. The fitter must follow the manufacturer's mounting and torque instructions, address the tow hitch and trailer wiring arrangement, and allow clearance around the body, tailgate and exhaust. Any spare wheel platform or jerry can holder must be installed in its intended position. Cameras and parking sensors should be tested after fitment where applicable.

Frequently asked questions

Is an off road tow bar or rear bar ADR compliant?

Compliance depends on the specific product, vehicle application, installation and intended use. Review the manufacturer's documentation and any labels or paperwork supplied with the bar. State and territory requirements can differ, particularly where towing equipment, lighting, registration details or vehicle modifications are involved. Our workshop can discuss the proposed setup, but owners should also check the regulations that apply where the vehicle is registered.

Do not assume that a rear bar preserves or raises the factory rating. The allowable towing setup depends on the vehicle manufacturer's limits and the ratings of the bar, tow hitch, tow ball mount and other connected components. Review the available product documentation and vehicle application before fitting. The lowest applicable limit within the complete towing system must still be observed.

An underbody spare may remain suitable where the vehicle and bar configuration allow it. A rear-mounted platform can make the spare easier to reach and move it away from underbody exposure, but it also adds rear load and changes access. Choose the layout after considering tyre size, tailgate operation, trailer clearance and the manufacturer's limits for the vehicle and bar.

There is no universal accessory-load figure for every rear bar. Capacity depends on the product, vehicle, mounting system and how the load is positioned. Use the manufacturer's documentation for the selected bar and each accessory. Include the spare wheel, jerry can holder, containers and other mounted equipment when assessing the total rear load and the vehicle's overall weight limits.

Whether parking sensors and the rear camera continue to work as intended depends on the vehicle, bar design and accessory layout. Review the manufacturer's product information for any applicable mounting or relocation requirements. A spare wheel or other rear-mounted accessory may affect the available field of view. If you are not sure, reach out to our friendly staff.

The collection includes the Thorburns Lockable Double Jerry Can Holder. Confirm that this jerry can holder is compatible with the selected bar and suitable for the containers being carried. A lock can deter casual interference, but it does not remove the need to secure the load correctly or follow applicable rules for transporting and storing fuel or water containers.

The Thorburns BBQ Box 2.0 is one of the matching Thorburns products listed in this collection. Review the manufacturer's product information for its intended use, bar compatibility and included components before ordering. Consider its position alongside the spare wheel, jerry can holder, tailgate and trailer connection so frequently used parts remain accessible.

A caravan can be towed only when the complete setup is compatible and used within all applicable ratings. Check the vehicle, rear bar, tow hitch, coupling and tow ball mount documentation. Weight distribution equipment may suit some combinations, but it must be selected for the specific vehicle and trailer. See our towing accessories collection or, if you are not sure, reach out to our friendly staff.

Installation time depends on the vehicle, rear bar, accessory layout, wiring and any camera or parking-sensor work. Workshop requirements and timing can be discussed once the complete setup is known. To request fitting at Ferntree Gully or Pakenham, provide the vehicle details, selected bar, towing equipment and accessories through the service enquiry form. If you are not sure, reach out to our friendly staff.

Contact the workshop before bringing a customer-supplied bar. Acceptance depends on the product's condition, confirmed vehicle application, complete hardware and available manufacturer instructions. The team may need to inspect the bar and supporting components before agreeing to installation. Missing, damaged or unsuitable parts can prevent safe fitment, even if the bar appears to match the vehicle.

Freight availability depends on the product, destination and handling requirements. Contact us with the vehicle details, selected bar and delivery location to discuss the available option. Self-installation must follow the manufacturer's instructions, including mounting, torque, wiring and towing requirements. Professional assessment is advisable where the installation changes the factory hitch, sensors or camera arrangement.

Product warranty terms vary by manufacturer and item, so review the applicable terms before purchase. Workshop-related concerns are assessed separately according to the work completed and the circumstances. Keep the invoice and supplied product documentation. If a fault develops, contact Ultimate Offroad with the vehicle details, installation information and clear photos so the team can advise on the appropriate assessment process.
