Most touring 4WD breakdowns we see on remote-area recovery jobs are not engine or transmission failures. They are electrical: a corroded earth, a melted fuse holder, a chafed harness through a chassis hole, an Anderson plug that has gone open-circuit. Electrical work is invisible when it is right, and a complete trip-stopper when it is wrong.

BRAKE CONTROLLERS

If you tow a trailer or caravan over 750kg in Australia, you need a brake controller. Brake controllers apply the trailer brakes proportionally with the tow vehicle, and proportional controllers (REDARC Tow-Pro Elite) read vehicle deceleration via accelerometer and apply trailer brake force smoothly to match how hard you are slowing the truck.

Time-delayed controllers apply brake force on a timer after you press the pedal, which works but feels rougher. Proportional is the modern standard, and Hayman Reese is a solid alternative on simpler builds.

ENGINE MONITORS

Modern 4WDs hide most operating data behind dash icons that only light up when something is already wrong. An engine monitor shows you transmission temperature, exhaust gas temperature, battery voltage, fuel rate and other critical values continuously, so you know what is happening before something fails.

ScanGauge is the standard for OBD-II vehicles, and it plugs into the diagnostic port without modifying any factory wiring. Worth fitting on any tow vehicle or remote-touring build, and entirely warranty-safe because the unit only reads ECU data, never writes to it.

SWITCHES, WIRING AND ACCESSORY HARNESSES

Touring builds run a lot of accessories: driving lights, work lights, fridge, compressor, water pump, awning lights. Each needs a switch, fuse, relay and properly sized wiring. Narva, Battery Works and Bainbridge Technologies supply the OEM-grade hardware we use for accessory wiring.

We pre-wire dash switch panels with labelled circuits, fuses, relays and indicator LEDs, and integrate switches into factory layouts. Common request for touring builds with multiple light circuits, and worth doing properly because a clean switch panel is the difference between a build that looks factory and one that looks aftermarket.

CAN-BUS INTEGRATION ON MODERN VEHICLES

Modern Rangers, LandCruisers, Hiluxes and similar use CAN-bus for switching and dash integration. Tapping factory CAN-bus circuits the wrong way throws dash codes and can disable factory features. We use CAN-bus-aware harnesses and switch interfaces where required, so accessories integrate without dash drama.

This is one of the areas where workshop install matters most. The wrong tap on a CAN-bus line can take half the dashboard offline and is unpleasant to diagnose later.

BATTERY MANAGEMENT HARDWARE

CABLING, FUSES AND THE FOUNDATION OF A RELIABLE BUILD

Wire gauge has to match current draw and run length: driving lights typically use 8 or 10 gauge, fridge circuits 6 or 8 gauge, battery cables (charger to auxiliary) 2 or 4 gauge. We size all wiring to current draw plus voltage drop tolerance.

Main fuses (Anderson plug, battery output) within 30cm of the battery terminal: anything further and the wire is unprotected. We fit ANL fuse blocks or Maxi fuses correctly placed at install. Most workshop electrical fires we see come from missing or wrongly placed fuses, never from the appliance itself.

WHAT A QUALITY AUTO-ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION INVOLVES

Auto-electrical work in a 4WD touches fuses, looms and (on modern vehicles) CAN-bus systems. Wrong wire gauge causes voltage drop and melted insulation, wrong fuse placement creates fire risk, wrong CAN-bus integration throws dash codes. None of this is the sort of work to gamble on.
