TOUGH DOG LIFT KIT: 40MM ADJUSTABLE SUSPENSION

Vehicle-specific suspension, matched to your 4WD and normal load

A Tough Dog lift kit should be matched to the exact vehicle, suspension configuration and normal operating load. This collection contains Tough Dog 40mm adjustable suspension packages for selected Toyota, Ford, Mitsubishi, Nissan and Isuzu platforms. We assess the vehicle and its permanent accessories before recommending a spring rate and initial damping setting.

The products listed here are specified as 40mm kits. If you arrived looking for a Tough Dog 2 inch lift kit, do not assume that the measurements are interchangeable. Confirm the stated lift height, vehicle application and complete modification package before ordering. A Tough Dog 40mm lift also does not guarantee clearance for a particular tyre size without checking the wheel and body combination.

KEY CATEGORIES AND WHAT THEY'RE BUILT FOR

UTE PLATFORMS (40MM ADJUSTABLE)

Applications include Hilux GUN125R, GUN126R and GGN125R, Hilux Rogue Widebody, Ranger PX1 and PX2, D-Max 4WD, Triton MV and the listed LandCruiser 79 Series single cab. Spring selection should reflect permanent front and rear accessories as well as normal load.

PRADO PLATFORMS (40MM ADJUSTABLE)

The collection includes Prado 150 short-wheelbase and long-wheelbase applications with non-air suspension. Confirm the suspension type before selecting a kit because the listed products are specifically identified as non-air applications.

OTHER PLATFORMS (40MM ADJUSTABLE)

Listed options cover Ford F150 applications from 2015 to 2020 and 2021 on, plus the Nissan Patrol Y62 with non-hydraulic suspension. The catalogue limitation in each product title matters when confirming fitment.

WHY CHOOSE TOUGH DOG ADJUSTABLE SUSPENSION

A Tough Dog adjustable suspension package allows rebound damping to be changed to suit how the vehicle is being used. Rebound controls the shock as it extends after compression. The setting can be softened or firmed without removing the shock, which is useful when a vehicle alternates between daily driving and loaded touring.

Adjustment does not replace correct spring selection. Springs support the vehicle and its load, while the shock controls movement. A firm damper cannot compensate for a spring that is unsuitable for the vehicle's permanent accessories or normal operating weight. We consider both parts of the package when specifying a kit.

VEHICLE-SPECIFIC LIFT KITS IN THIS COLLECTION

Toyota: Hilux GUN125R/126R/GGN125R (10/2015 on), Hilux Rogue Widebody (2023 on), Prado 150 SWB and LWB (non-air) and 79 Series single cab V8 and 2.8L (up to 08/16).

Ford: Ranger PX1 and PX2 (11/2011 to 08/2018), F150 (2015 to 2020) and F150 (2021 on). Mitsubishi: Triton MV (2023 on). Nissan: Patrol Y62 (non-hydraulic only). Isuzu: D-Max 4WD (08/20 on).

For a Tough Dog Hilux lift kit, check the chassis code, production date and body configuration rather than selecting by the Hilux name alone. Apply the same process to every vehicle. Small differences in year, suspension type or variant can change the required package.

SPRING RATE, DAMPING AND LOAD

A stock vehicle and a touring vehicle with permanent accessories place different demands on their suspension. Tough Dog spring-rate choices are intended to account for configurations such as a front bar and winch or a rear canopy and drawers. We match the rate to the equipment normally carried, not simply to the desired lift height.

The initial rebound setting is then selected around the vehicle's normal use, including road driving, corrugated tracks or touring load. If the load configuration changes, the damping can be reviewed. A material change to permanent weight may also require the spring selection and vehicle compliance to be reconsidered.

BUMP STOPS, SWAY BARS AND SUPPORTING COMPONENTS

A lift can change bump-stop geometry and sway-bar end-link angles. These areas should be inspected during installation rather than treated as identical across every platform. Kit contents and any supporting component requirements also vary, so confirm the relevant product listing before ordering.

Where additional parts are required, review the suspension components collection. We can assess the vehicle and identify supporting work during the quote process.

CHOOSE BY USE CASE

For a daily-driven 4WD that also tours under load, adjustable damping can help accommodate the change between those conditions. The spring rate still needs to reflect the vehicle's permanent setup. Selecting the heaviest available spring without considering normal load can leave an unloaded vehicle firmer than intended.

A 40mm kit is not automatically the right choice for every build. Vehicles with substantial permanent weight, unusual suspension configurations or wider modification plans may need a different approach. Towing, tyre changes and planned GVM work should be discussed before the suspension package is finalised.

WHAT A QUALITY LIFT KIT INSTALL INVOLVES

Suspension installation is more than replacing shocks and springs. Springs must be seated correctly, fasteners tightened appropriately and bump stops and sway-bar components inspected at the new ride height. The vehicle then needs an alignment at its final ride height. Damping is set around the stated load and the vehicle is road tested before handover.

Our Ferntree Gully and Pakenham workshops handle Tough Dog lift kit fitting from initial vehicle assessment through to alignment and initial adjustment. Installation time depends on the platform, its condition and any supporting components required. Send us a service enquiry with the vehicle, variant, suspension type, permanent accessories and normal load so we can confirm the package and booking requirements.

Email sales@ultimateoffroad.com.au with your vehicle details and our friendly staff will confirm fitment, quote the work and arrange a booking at Ferntree Gully or Pakenham.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 40mm Tough Dog kit GVM-rated?

The suspension kit does not, by itself, increase the vehicle's GVM. If your build needs a higher GVM, the suspension, load assumptions and certification pathway need to be considered together. See our GVM upgrades collection. We can discuss the appropriate path for your vehicle before parts are selected.

Do not assume that lift height alone guarantees tyre clearance. Clearance can vary with wheel offset, tyre construction, bodywork, alignment and the individual platform. Some vehicles may need additional work. We check the full combination before fitment and can explain what is required for your vehicle.

The external adjustment changes rebound damping, which controls the shock as it extends after compression. This lets the setting be reviewed when the vehicle changes between daily driving and loaded touring. It does not change the spring rate or remove the need to select springs that suit the vehicle's permanent accessories and normal load.

That depends on the vehicle, driveline angles and the complete suspension package. It should not be decided from lift height alone. We check the exact model and configuration during quoting and identify any supporting components required before installation. This avoids making a blanket recommendation across different platforms.

Self-fitting requires appropriate lifting equipment, spring-handling tools and torque equipment, followed by a correct wheel alignment. Springs can store substantial energy, and vehicle-specific procedures must be followed. If you are unsure about the equipment or procedure, use a suitably equipped suspension workshop and confirm the final alignment before driving normally.

Requirements depend on the complete vehicle, not the suspension kit in isolation. Check current Victorian modification and roadworthiness requirements, including the combined effect of suspension, tyres and other changes. Requirements differ between states. We can discuss the proposed build and supporting paperwork, but certification advice should come from the relevant authority or an appropriately qualified certifier where required.

Installation time varies by platform, vehicle condition and the supporting work required. Alignment, inspection and initial damping setup are part of the workshop process and should not be rushed. We confirm the expected booking requirements after checking the exact vehicle, suspension type and any additional components being fitted at the same time.

The result depends on choosing a spring rate that suits the vehicle's normal operating load. A spring selected for substantial permanent accessories may feel firmer when the vehicle is empty. Adjustable rebound damping can refine shock control between different uses, but it cannot correct a spring rate that is poorly matched to the vehicle.

Warranty coverage is subject to the manufacturer's current terms, the specific product and the circumstances of the claim. Installation records and correct vehicle application may be relevant. We will confirm the applicable warranty information when quoting and can explain the process if a product or fitment concern arises after installation.

Provide the vehicle year, model, variant, suspension type, permanent accessories and normal touring or towing load. We use those details to confirm the listed application and discuss spring selection, supporting components and compliance considerations. Once the scope is established, our Ferntree Gully or Pakenham workshop can confirm booking availability.

Contact us with the vehicle year, model, variant and suspension type so the application can be checked before dispatch. We will confirm whether shipping is available for the selected product, along with the applicable freight arrangements. Fitment, alignment and any locally required supporting work remain the customer's responsibility when a kit is shipped.
