4WD SIDE PROTECTION: ROCK SLIDERS & SIDE STEPS

Heavy-duty rocker protection and access for serious touring

Side protection covers the rocker panel and door sill from impact damage on technical terrain. Rock sliders are heavy-duty bars built to take side impacts from rocks or stumps and protect the door sill, while side steps are lighter, mainly access aids that will not take a hard side hit. Choose based on how the vehicle is used.

Ultimate Offroad supplies and fits heavy-duty rock sliders for serious off-road work and side steps for daily access. Vehicle-specific, ADR-compliant where applicable, fitted at our Ferntree Gully and Pakenham workshops.

KEY CATEGORIES AND WHAT THEY'RE BUILT FOR

ROCK SLIDERS

Heavy-duty steel sliders mounted through chassis with engineered outriggers. Take side impacts and protect the rocker panel and door sill.

SIDE STEPS

Lighter access aids for daily-driver utes and family 4WDs. Bolt to factory rocker mounting points, support 100-150kg static load.

SIDE BARS

Hybrid bars combining access function with mild side protection. Suit weekend touring and mild trail use.

VEHICLE-SPECIFIC

Most popular utes and 4WDs (Ranger, Hilux, Triton, D-MAX) have vehicle-specific kits with engineered mounting points.

ROCK SLIDERS

Rock sliders mount through the chassis with engineered outriggers, taking impact loads through the chassis rails rather than the body. Steel construction, typically 25 to 40kg per side. Designed to slide over a rock under the vehicle without damage.

Standard kit on serious off-road builds (technical 4WD club work, hard track touring, expedition vehicles). We fit Offroad Animal, Jungle 4x4 and similar rock slider systems with proper hardware, sometimes welded for fully reinforced installs.

SIDE STEPS

Side steps bolt to the rocker mounting points and provide an access step for getting in and out of higher 4WDs. Lightweight (5 to 15kg per side), often with rubber tread tops. Suit daily-driver utes and 4WDs that see only mild trail use, or family vehicles where short children and dogs need a step up.

Side steps support typical body weight loads, but they will not take a hard side hit and can catch on rocks off-road. For technical terrain, fit sliders.

CHOOSE BASED ON HOW THE VEHICLE IS USED

Rock slider for technical off-road work where the vehicle scrapes rocks and stumps. Side step for daily-driver access. They serve different jobs, and there is no single right answer.

Heavier rock sliders give the most protection, with full chassis-rail mounting and impact-rated outriggers. Mid-tier hybrid bars combine access function with mild side protection. Light side steps provide access only.

BRANDS WE STOCK AND WHY

Offroad Animal covers heavy-duty rock sliders for Ranger, Hilux, Triton, D-MAX and similar utes. Aggressive off-road styling, full chassis-rail mounting, rated for technical work. Jungle 4x4 covers side and rear protection components with practical design and competitive pricing for the spec, a solid mid-tier option for builds that need protection without the premium spend.

Rough Country brings side step and rocker protection across various utes, an entry-level option for daily-driven 4WDs. Clearview covers vehicle-specific side step brackets and supporting hardware.

WHAT A QUALITY SIDE PROTECTION INSTALLATION INVOLVES

Rock sliders are a workshop fit. Mounting through the chassis requires the right hardware, often welding for fully reinforced installs, and a proper alignment so the slider does not catch on tyres or compromise approach angle. Cheap "body-mounted" sliders can damage the rocker panel under load, which is why we fit chassis-mounted only.

Side steps bolt to factory mounting points and can be owner-fit for the mechanically experienced. We do both at Ferntree Gully and Pakenham: and confirm a firm timeframe at booking. Send a service enquiry with your vehicle and the type of protection you want.

Most popular utes (Ranger, Hilux, Triton, D-MAX) have vehicle-specific kits. We confirm fitment before booking.

Side protection components do not require ADR certification, but installs must not compromise structural integrity or interfere with safety systems. Professional install is the standard.

No, when fitted correctly with chassis-rail mounting and proper outrigger geometry. Cheap "body-mounted" sliders can damage the rocker panel under load -- we fit chassis-mounted only.

Yes, when properly fitted to the rocker mounting points. Typical side steps support 100-150kg static load.

Yes, side steps hang lower than rock sliders and are not designed for impact. Off-road work, fit sliders.

Possible if you have the right tools, hoist and the kit is bolt-in. Workshop install is recommended for chassis-rail mounting and weld-in kits.

Booking lead time for rock sliders and side steps depends on stock and on workshop load. Bolt-in kits fit faster than chassis-rail mounted or weld-in sliders, which need the hoist longer. Send us a service enquiry with your vehicle and the kit and we will confirm a slot at Ferntree Gully or Pakenham at booking.

Yes. Heavy items need freight booking. Contact for quote.

Premium sliders rated for rollover protection have specific design and certification. Standard sliders are for impact protection, not rollover. Check the spec.

Rock sliders are typically supplied in factory black powder coat. Some models can be painted to match the vehicle.
