An electric brake controller manages the electrical signal sent from the tow vehicle to a trailer's electric brakes. A correctly selected trailer brake controller helps the trailer respond in step with the vehicle and gives the driver control over braking output. The right unit and installation depend on the vehicle, trailer brake system, connector and existing tow wiring.

Time-delay and proportional controllers produce that output differently. A time-delay unit applies a preset output over a set ramp period after the brake pedal is pressed. A proportional unit responds to the tow vehicle's deceleration. The controllers available in this collection use proportional control.

PROPORTIONAL VS TIME-DELAY

A time-delay controller sends a preset level of trailer braking after the brake pedal is applied. Its response does not directly match the vehicle's actual rate of deceleration. That can require more compromise when setting output for changing traffic, loads and road conditions.

A proportional electric brake controller measures vehicle deceleration and adjusts the trailer output accordingly. Light vehicle braking produces lighter trailer braking, while harder deceleration produces a stronger response. Correct output adjustment remains important because trailer load, brake condition and road surface all affect how the combination behaves.

TOW-PRO ELITE VS GUARDIAN IQ

The Redarc Tow-Pro Elite V3 and Hayman Reese Guardian IQ provide proportional control. Choose by use case, preferred control layout and confirmed vehicle compatibility.

Choose the Redarc Tow Pro Elite V3 when a discreet dash layout is a priority. Its main unit is concealed and the separate control is positioned within the driver's reach. Its operating modes provide a choice between proportional automatic operation and driver-controlled output.

Choose the Hayman Reese Guardian IQ when an integrated display and adjustment interface better suits the cabin layout or driver preference. The visible display makes it easier to check the selected output without relying on a separate concealed unit and remote knob arrangement.

Neither controller should be selected on brand alone. Confirm the vehicle's factory tow package, available mounting position, trailer connector and brake type first. A clean physical fit is only part of the job. The controller must also be electrically compatible with the complete towing setup.

VEHICLE-SPECIFIC HARNESSES MATTER

Brake controller wiring on a modern 4WD needs to account for the vehicle's electrical architecture and factory tow equipment. An incorrect signal pickup or unsuitable connection can cause faults or unreliable brake operation. This is not a circuit that should be connected by assumption.

Where a suitable vehicle-specific harness is available, it can connect through the intended factory interface and reduce unnecessary loom modification. Availability varies by vehicle and controller. Where there is no suitable harness, the custom brake controller wiring must use confirmed signal points, appropriate protection and secure cable routing.

WHAT A QUALITY BRAKE CONTROLLER INSTALLATION INVOLVES

A sound installation starts by confirming the tow vehicle, trailer brake system and connector arrangement. The controller then needs a suitable power supply, brake input, trailer output and earth. Components and wiring must be mounted securely and kept clear of heat, movement and potential damage.

Setup must follow the controller manufacturer's mounting and commissioning instructions. Output should be adjusted for the trailer and checked under controlled conditions. The driver should also understand the manual control, operating mode and signs of a trailer connection fault before towing.

Do I need a brake controller if my trailer has electric brakes?

If a trailer uses electric brakes, it needs a compatible control signal from the tow vehicle. An electric brake controller generates that signal and lets the driver adjust trailer braking. The correct setup depends on the trailer brake system, tow vehicle and wiring, so confirm compatibility before towing.

Australian braking requirements depend on trailer mass, brake type, breakaway equipment and the state or territory where the combination is registered and used. The 750kg figure is not, by itself, a blanket rule requiring an electric controller. Check the applicable road authority requirements and your trailer specification. If you are not sure about fitment, reach out to our friendly staff.

Compatibility depends on the vehicle, factory tow package, connector and the harnesses offered for that application. Vehicle-specific options exist for many common tow vehicles, while others require a custom installation. Any accessory installation can affect warranty coverage if it damages the vehicle or is fitted contrary to the manufacturer's requirements. A suitable vehicle-specific harness can reduce unnecessary loom modification where one is available, but it is not a blanket warranty guarantee. Check the vehicle warranty terms. The controller may be reusable, but the harness, mounting hardware and installation requirements can differ between vehicles. The original installation must be removed correctly, then the new vehicle must be assessed for compatible brake controller wiring. On the Redarc Tow Pro Elite V3, automatic mode is intended to provide proportional trailer braking during normal road use. User-controlled mode allows the driver to apply a selected output, which can suit some off-road or low-traction situations. Mode choice and output still need to follow Redarc's instructions and suit the trailer, load and surface.

Installation and commissioning must follow the manufacturer's instructions for the selected unit. That may include mounting, initial calibration, output adjustment and a controlled function check. Compatibility depends on the connector, existing tow wiring and the way the vehicle and trailer circuits have been configured.
