THE BUSH COMPANY ROOFTOP TENTS & AWNINGS

Australian-designed, tested in Australian conditions, fitted at our workshops

The Bush Company has been making touring camping gear for the Australian market since 2017. The brand's hard shell rooftop tents and 270 Series awnings have become the standard equipment on serious touring rigs across Victoria and Australia, and there is a reason for that: the gear is built around how Australians actually camp, not adapted from a US or UK product line.

Ultimate Offroad stocks the full Bush Company range, from the AX27 hard shell tent to the 270 Series awnings and supporting accessories. Australian-designed, locally supported, fitted at our Victorian workshops on rated roof rack platforms.

KEY CATEGORIES AND WHAT THEY'RE BUILT FOR

AX27 HARD SHELL

2-person hard shell rooftop tent. Aluminium honeycomb shell, gas struts, marine-grade canvas. Deploys in 60 seconds.

AX27 MAX

AX27 with extra vertical pop-up space for taller occupants and a third sleeper. Premium hard shell choice for families.

270 XT AWNING

Self-supporting 270-degree awning covering side and rear. Deploys in under 30 seconds, holds in moderate wind without poles.

SOFT SHELL TENTS

Lower cost or smaller pack-down profile. Pack down to 1100mm low profile for low-clearance garages.

HARD SHELL ROOFTOP TENTS

The AX27 and AX27-MAX hard shell rooftop tents deploy in under 60 seconds and pack down with bedding inside. Aluminium honeycomb shell, gas struts, marine-grade canvas inner walls. The MAX adds extra interior height and pop-up space for taller occupants and three-person sleeping.

Both fit on rated roof rack platforms (Front Runner Slimline II, Rhino-Rack Pioneer, ARB Base Rack) on most popular Australian 4WDs (Ranger, Hilux, Triton, Patrol, Prado, LandCruiser, D-MAX, MU-X, Navara). Smaller vehicles may need the more compact AX17 instead.

SOFT SHELL ROOFTOP TENTS

For owners who want the lower cost or smaller pack-down profile, the soft shell range provides serious touring tent capability without hard shell weight. Pack down to 1100mm low profile for low-clearance garages.

Soft shells benefit from periodic airing if bedding has gone in damp, but they trade off pack-down speed against weight and price. Best for occasional weekenders and budget-conscious touring builds.

270 SERIES AWNINGS

The 270 XT and 180 XT MAX awnings deploy in under 30 seconds, cover the side and rear of the vehicle, and stay deployed in moderate wind without poles. Side and rear walls (sold separately) extend the awning into a fully enclosed space when needed.

The benchmark touring awning for many Australian builds. Marine-grade fabric, no-pole self-supporting design, handles moderate wind and rain without anchoring; for strong wind, anchor with the included pegs and guy ropes. Faster setup than any pole awning we have used.

TENT AND AWNING ACCESSORIES

Annexes, walls, ladder extensions, mattress upgrades, anti-condensation mats, awning lighting and the supporting kit that turns a tent and an awning into a comfortable bush camp. Browse tent and awning accessories for the full range.

For owners building a permanent touring camp setup, the accessory list grows: side walls, end walls, mesh walls, annex rooms, awning lights, anti-condensation mats. The right combination depends on how you camp and where you go.

WHY THE BUSH COMPANY VS CHEAPER ALTERNATIVES

The Bush Company gear costs more than entry-level rooftop tents from cheaper brands. The reason is build quality and serviceability. Premium tents and awnings hold up to a season of touring corrugations, salt air, alpine condensation and 45-degree heat. Cheap tents do not.

The brand also has full Australian service support: spares are available, warranty claims are processed locally, and the kit is supported for years rather than abandoned after the first season. Premium The Bush Company tents typically last 10 to 15 years with regular touring use, with the fabric and aluminium structure serviceable.

WHAT A QUALITY ROOFTOP TENT FITMENT INVOLVES

Rooftop tents and awnings need a rated mounting platform. Most factory roof racks are not rated for the dynamic loads of an open rooftop tent (60 to 90kg base weight plus occupants).

We fit Bush Company tents and awnings on Front Runner Slimline II, Rhino-Rack Pioneer or ARB Base Rack platforms at Ferntree Gully and Pakenham, with full alignment to vehicle and pre-deployment testing. We confirm a firm timeframe at booking. Submit a service enquiry with your vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the AX27 and the AX27-MAX?

AX27 is the standard 2-person hard shell. AX27-MAX adds vertical pop-up space for taller occupants and accommodates a third sleeper or extra storage space inside.

A rated platform: Front Runner Slimline II, Rhino-Rack Pioneer or ARB Base Rack. Factory roof rails are usually not rated. We will spec.

Most Australian 4WDs (Ranger, Hilux, Triton, Patrol, Prado, LandCruiser, D-MAX, MU-X, Navara) accept the AX27 on a rated platform. Smaller vehicles may need the more compact AX17 instead.

Yes. The hard shell seals against rain, dust and wind. Bedding stays inside year-round. Soft shells benefit from periodic airing.

Yes. Marine-grade fabric, no-pole self-supporting design, handles moderate wind and rain without anchoring. Strong wind: anchor with the included pegs and guy ropes.

Yes. Side walls, end walls, mesh walls and annexes are sold separately. Build an enclosed space when needed.

AX27: 30-60 seconds deploy, 2-3 minutes pack. 270 awning: under 30 seconds deploy. Faster than any soft shell tent or pole awning.

2-4 L/100km on highway is typical. Hard shell tents are slightly more aerodynamic than soft shells but the impact is real.

Standard The Bush Company warranty covers structural defects. Full warranty terms supplied with each tent and awning. We support warranty claims as the supplying dealer.

Possible if the rated rack platform is already fitted. The tent itself bolts to the rack with M8 hardware (supplied). Workshop install is recommended where the rack platform also needs to be fitted.

Booking lead time depends on stock, workshop load and whether the rack platform is already fitted or needs to go on first. A tent and awning fit onto an existing rated rack is a smaller slot than a full rack platform plus tent and awning install. Send us a service enquiry with your vehicle and the kit and we will confirm a slot at Ferntree Gully or Pakenham at booking.
