The Ram 1500 is built for towing and hauling, but when fully equipped with accessories, luggage, and passengers, the stock payload can run out fast.
Staying under the manufacturer’s Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) becomes challenging for touring setups, work requirements, or when towing heavy loads.

- Finite Element Analysis (FEA) testing: Validates axle strength and maximum carrying capacity.
- Brake Testing: Performed laden, unladen, and under partial system failure to ensure compliance with ADR35/00.
- ESC Testing: If required, ensures the electronic stability control system remains effective or better than OEM standards.
The GVM is the maximum allowable mass of a fully laden vehicle. Tough Dog GVM upgrades allow your Ram 1500 to legally carry more weight without breaching ADRs or safety laws.
Approval pathways depend on registration status:
- Federal Approval: For new vehicles not yet registered, supplied with an additional compliance plate.
- State Approval: For vehicles already registered, achieved by using Federal compliance data combined with an inspection by an authorised state engineer.
