The Toyota LandCruiser 79 Series is built for tough conditions and heavy workloads, but its factory payload can be restrictive once towing gear, accessories, and passengers are added.
Keeping under the Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) is challenging when the vehicle is set up for trade or long-distance touring.

Federal approval requires extensive testing to ensure the LandCruiser 79 Series performs as well or better than factory specification under heavier loads.
With a Tough Dog GVM upgrade, your 79 Series retains confident braking, handling, and steering even at maximum capacity. Testing includes:
- Finite Element Analysis (FEA) testing: Confirms axle strength and maximum load rating.
- Brake Testing: Performed laden, unladen, and under partial failure to comply with ADR35/00 requirements.
- ESC Testing: If required, ensures the electronic stability control system is as effective as, or better than, OEM standards.
The GVM is the maximum legal weight a vehicle can carry when fully loaded. A Tough Dog upgrade increases your LandCruiser 79 Series’ carrying capacity without breaching ADRs or road laws.
Approval pathways are based on registration status:
- Federal Approval: For new vehicles not yet registered. Supplied with an additional compliance plate.
- State Approval: For already-registered vehicles. Certification uses Federal compliance data combined with inspection by an authorised state engineer.
